So What’s All The Hype About Giveaways? Part 1
on February 17th, 2012 at 10:16 am
So, WHAT is all the hype about giveaways?
Well, What is a giveaway?
A giveaway event is where a group of marketers get together and offer various gifts FREE to anybody who would like them. The only cost is to join the giver’s email list.
Well, can I give something away?
You certainly can. There are only a few things you need in place to be a contributor, and I will tell you about them now.
Can I make money from them?
Not enough to retire. There are optional upgrades when signing up to a giveaway event. These upgrades vary in price from event to event, and can be as low as $1 or as high as the organiser thinks the market can pay. Money is made if one of your referrals chooses to upgrade. Your commission would depend, 1) On the particular event, and 2) On the level of your upgrade.
So why take part?
It is an ideal inexpensive and reliable way to build your list, and to get your name known amongst Internet Marketeters, particularly those who also include Giveaways as part of their business.
Will I get a big list from giveaways?
That depends on how well the giveaway is promoted, and on how desirable your gift is. I have had less than 5 new list members on some giveaways, and over 50 on others. The thing is, as in any venture it takes time to build a responsive list.
But won’t all those who sign up just want the free stuff, and then unsubscribe?
You will always get a degree of people who are ‘freebie hunters’ and that is normal when any list is built with free offers, but you will find more stay members of your list than unsubscribe.
Right, I’ll just go and sort a gift out!
Slow down tiger, you need a few things in place first, such as,
- Some type of web hosting, and preferably, but not essential, a domain name.
- Somewhere online to store your gift.
- A Thankyou page
- A means of contact by anybody who has a problem with your gift
- An Autoresponder
- Your Gift
Now, lets break these down a little.
Web Hosting
is not overly expensive. For as little as 99c per month you can get some basic hosting, and only upgrade as time and funds permit. There are free web hosts, and if you choose to go that route, that’s fine, but bear in mind, many free hosts put some kind of advertising on your site. Not only that, they will have far more clients on each server than paid web hosts. This may not be a problem, but you may sacrifice website availability, or down times for the sake of a few cents.
Domain Names
A domain name can be bought for as little as 99c for one year, although ideally you want a country specific TLD (Top Level Domain), a .com, or .net. Again, get what you can afford, but try to avoid hosts who give you a free subdomain, e.g. yoursubdomain.freewebhosting.com. It looks far less professional than www.yourdomain.com.
Online Gift Storage
Now, we have got to be careful with this one. Do you remember a couple of weeks Megaupload was taken down, and the owners arrested, and just today a music sharing site *allegedly* in the UK was also taken down. Now I know that many people use these file sharing sites with the best intentions, but honestly, a few cents a month for web hosting is not a lot to pay for peace of mind, and the knowledge that your files won’t suddenly disappear.
Look, if you really want to use one of these online storage sites, nobody can stop you, but I really recommend against it.
Thankyou Page
A thankyou page, whilst not essential is advisable. Whenever you receive a visitor for a free gift, just giving them the gift is, potentially, throwing money away. A thankyou page is the ideal way to promote something, your latest ebook, or program, a report or an affiliate link, or a One Time Offer (OTO). The main thing is, don’t overdo the adverts on the thankyou page. A couple of banners or linked images is enough, or the OTO, which may comprise various things, all part of the same offer.
I would also suggest that you don’t have pop-ups stopping the visitor from leaving your page easily. The last thing you want to do is annoy a new list member.
Essentially, you also need a link to the gift download again.
Now don’t worry if you are not very skilled with web page design or coding, I certainly aren’t, but there are ways around this.
You could download a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get). This kind of program lets you put on the page whatever you want, including images and links, just as though you were using wordpad, or other suchlike editing program.
In fact, if you have cpanel hosting, if you go to the file manager, there is a WYSIWYG built in there with the html edit link.
A Means of Contact
You need to have a way for the free gift recipient to contact you if they have a problem with the gift, such as the download didn’t work, the zip file didn’t open etc. An email address is fine as a point of contact, but if you really want to look the part, then get yourself a ticket support system, and osTicket have such a system which is available free. If your host has Fantastico, osTicket is one of the programmes which can be automatically installed.
How much more impressive will a ticket support system appear than an email address.
You may wonder why go to all this trouble for a free gift which has cost you time and money to organise. The simple answer is you need to be professional. If you ignore their requests for help, they won’t stick around long. There is also the possibility of them being made aware that if you go to all this trouble for a freebie, how much more will you put yourself out for a paid product.
An Autoresponder
Basically, an autoresponder is a web based email handling service. There are choices of paid, free, or having your own with your hosting. The full services offered by an autoresponder is a subject too large for this post, so I will just cover the part involved with giveaways.
Having your own sounds good, but there are a lot of legalities involved with emailing subscribers. You have to be very careful to ensure all the requirements are in place, or you could easily find yourself being prosecuted.
Paid autoresponder services vary in price, and they offer differing services. You need to look around and see which one other marketers recommend.
Free autoresponders differ in their services and efficiency, but what they all have in common is using adverts to support their services.
When you have decided which autoresponder to use you need to ensure they are using double opt-in. This means the person wanting the gift have to confirm they are agreeable to joining your list.
Lastly, you need to have a follow up message arranged to be sent immediately after the new list member has confirmed their opt-in, which includes the link for your thankyou page, where they can download your gift.
The Gift
The gift you offer should, ideally, be unique, relatively new, downloadable and if possible one you have made. The kind of gift you offer would be an ebook, a report, a program, web design tools, graphics, PLR (Private Label Rights) or educational, preferably related to Internet Marketing. Some giveaways allow you to offer membership sites, or web hosting as a gift also.
I would suggest that you join a couple of giveaways as an ordinary member to see the kind of gifts being offered. You will often see the same gift being offered repeatedly in different giveaways by the same person. This does work, and it is something I do.
This post ended up being far longer than I envisaged, but I hope you find it useful.
Would you be involved in a giveaway after reading this post?

Hi Barry
I discovered Giveaways a couple of months ago and I admit I have become hooked! Although my list is building very slowly (I know I need to upgrade more!) it IS building and hopefully they will stay with me.
You have covered all the aspects of what you need to be a contributor so thanks for sharing, looking forward to part 2.
Have a great day
Regards

Hi Pauline,
Giveaways are great aren’t they. Just recently I set up my first giveaway thanks to Aimee Grace, and that is where your list numbers start flying. Upgrading is also an important part, but you have to be selective. I will have part 2 out in a couple of days, I think you’ll like that too,
Barry
Hi Barry,
Yes, giveaways are very good ways to build your list. As you said, there is no telling how many people a specific give away will bring in, because sometimes it’s hard to predict what people will or won’t go for.
Regardless of this fact, every blogger today should have a give away.
Right now I am giving away, free advertising on my last post on the comment area, you can come over and do just that
Have a great day, Barry

Hi Sylviane,
Our comments must have passed somewhere out there on the web. Your’s is a great idea, and very generous, and any blogger should take up the chance of some free advertising, let’s face it. we all need it.
Thanks for your visit,
Barry
Hey Barry,
Would you believe me if I told you I have never joined a giveaway before?
I think I actually did on my first stages but as a freebie seeker, I do remember getting some good stuff from those sites but I never thought about joining them as a contributor.
I guess I was missing the point entirely!
Anyway, I can see you have a pretty cool list of giveaways and since I’m deciding myself on joining them, I’ll have to split them between you and Linda Bond who I already promised to join under her links.
I am not going to upgrade (just yet) I want to get the ‘hang’ out of them first and then decide what to do.
Thanks for the amazing article and reminding me of doing something about these giveaways!
Sergio
PS. Do you use some sort of giveaway script to maintain your section updated automatically?

Hey Sergio,
We probably have the same list, so splitting between the 2 of us would be awfully nice of you

Hi Sergio,
joining a giveaway as a member and seeing how it works without being a contributor is the ideal way to start your giveaway list building journey.
There is a piece of software to keep your giveaway page updated, available from Guido Nussbaum, who I believe is also involved with traffic exchanges too, the software is ‘Giveaway Announcer’,
Good luck in your giveaway journey,
Barry

Excellent review here Barry!
I never heard of osTicket – will have to check that out.
Another point, I might mention – not sure it is valid now as these giveaways now have point systems, but it used to be that that the sooner you joined, the better because your gift would be on the first few pages. Not sure how that all works now…so like one of the last giveaways I entered, I was only the 9th person to sign up..lol. I got on it right away and got quite a few signups already, thanks to Push Button Software. But, do you know – is that getting an early ticket no longer the case with the point system?
OR is it just some of those events utilize the points and others do not? It’s something new to me and you might not know either, but just thought I would check
Oh and I have been getting quite a few signups, nothing to write home about, but enough to build my list back up again, which is pretty cool.

Hi Linda,
Thanks for your visit and comments,
There still is a points system with the giveaways, but I was going to discuss that in part 2 where I will talk about the actual giveaway itself, and explain the whole signing up and promoting procedure, but thanks for the reminder,
Push button software looks great, do you have an affiliate link I can sign up with?

Hi Barry
Sorry its taken me a while to get over here mate I have been meaning to as you know. I am just about back on top of things now. I’m surprised you haven’t kicked my Butt mate!
I really enjoyed this post Barry; being a contributor in a giveaways is something I haven’t actively got involved in as yet but I want to at some point this year.
I invested in Keith Purkiss’s Push Button Software last year which I know is going to make it a lot easier for me!
I have been told on numerous occassions to get invloved as its a great way to build your list so its on my list!
Thanks for sharing this information Barry I for one have found it very beneficial and I look forward to part two.
Take care, catch up soon

Hi Ian,
I am always pleased when you visit mate so no worries, I know you have been busy, and only having the use of one arm for a time doesn’t help.
Giveaways are great for list building, and it is exciting when you check your autoresponder and find more people signing up, and it proves what everyone says, giving value is the way to success.
People will love your PLR stuff mate, especially ‘how to’,
I look forward to seeing your name in the list of contributors,
take care mate,
Barry
Great explanation of this Barry and I will admit, I never had luck with these. Linda knows the story because we were both part of Alex Jeffrey’s training and giveaways was part of it.
I set everything up just how they told me but never got my sites approved because they kept coming back telling me something was wrong with the coding. I had no clue what it could be since Alex’s training course had literally done all of this for us. All I did was paste it into my own site and set up my own freebies. After months of fighting with it I just gave up.
I know that Alex built his entire list mostly through giveaways so I know how powerful they can be. Linda said she’d help me if I wanted to venture back into this so maybe down the road.
Great information on this though and I wish everyone the very best of luck with this!

Hi Adrienne,
Thanks for your visit,
I will be explaining the actual set up of the giveaway as a contributor in Part 2, it may help.
I wasn’t aware that Alex Jeffreys began with giveaways, just goes to show that wherever we start there is nothing to stop us reaching those goals we set, except ourselves.
Talking of Alex Jeffreys, he has just had a WSO where he as selling his previous $997 course for just $27, without the additional support, that was the upsell. Anyway, I couldn’t let that pass, so here’s hoping it is a good investment,
Barry
Have you ever thought about adding a little bit more than just your articles? I mean, what you say is valuable and all. Nevertheless think about if you added some great pictures or video clips to give your posts more, “pop”! Your content is excellent but with pics and clips, this blog could undeniably be one of the greatest in its niche. Terrific blog!
Hi,
Thanks for your comment. I am intending to get on with videos, but am still too nervous about any potential outcome,
I appreciate what you say, and thanks for your help,

Great post! I am new to giveaway events myself, but I do love them already. I just joined my first two events, one of which launched just 2 days ago and I am seeing my list grow already.
I am just excited to see how big my subscriber list is by the end of the event.

Hi Barry
I read Part 2 first! LOL! However, after reading this and Adrienne’s comment, it has put me off a bit. I can’t cope with scripts yet. I do belong to Keith’s Push Button Giveaways so may check that out one of these days.
I do want to join Giveaways this year, actually I have to cos it was part of my plan and that makes it accountable. Oh! dear!

Giveaways may have changed since Adrienne last tried, the thing now is that your landing page must be for the gift and autoresponder form only.
